Yay! I’m going interrailing

In April and May I’ll be spending three weeks travelling around Central Europe on a train. I’m going interrailing. And I’m So. Freaking. Excited!

My trip will start in Copenhagen and end in Zagreb, and I intend to visit Berlin, Prague, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest and maybe Ljubljana along the way.

interrailing

By the end of my trip, I hope to be able answer some questions like:

  • Is interrailing cost effective?
  • Is interrailing really just for teenagers? Am I too old? (I don’t think so, but time will tell)
  • Is it realistic to try and squeeze in 7 or 8 countries in three weeks?
  • How much can you really get to know a city in just a few days?
  • What ‘free gift’ does InterRail send you if you return your completed travel diary?

I also hope to see some cool stuff, make amazing memories and have a jolly good time.

Here’s a small taster of what I plan to get up to:

Copenhagen, Denmark

Is Copenhagen the world’s happiest capital city? I want to find out for myself.

Whilst I’m there I intend to spend some time relaxing at Nyhavn Harbour. I want to experience an alternative way of living at Freetown Christiania and I’m told Tivoli Gardens is beautiful, so I hope to go there too.

Berlin, Germany

I spent a few days travelling solo in Berlin last April and I just loved it. Berlin is definitely one of the coolest cities I’ve ever visited. Check out my post, Berlin Highlights, to read about some of my favourite things to do in Berlin.

This time round, I’m looking forward to exploring some of the lesser known sights as well as getting to grips with what I’m told is Berlin’s amazing nightlife.

Prague, Czech Republic

I have a list as long as my arm of things to do and see in Prague. I know I won’t have time to fit everything in. But as it’ll be my first time visiting the city, I definitely intend to see some of Prague’s main tourist attractions like Charles Bridge, Prague Astronomical Clock, Karlštejn Castle and Prague’s Dancing House.

Vienna, Austria

I know so many people who have visited Vienna in the winter months leading up to Christmas. I intend to see if it’s as beautiful as everyone says it is at Christmas, in Springtime. I’m still working on my Vienna bucket list but for starters, it includes visits to the Globe Museum, The Observation Tower and The Narrenturm.

Bratislava, Slovakia

I’ll probably visit Bratislava on a day trip from Vienna, so I won’t have much time there. What I do know though, is that it’ll be one heck of a jam packed, non-stop day.

Budapest, Hungary

I’m excited about riding the Funicular to the top of Castle Hill and exploring Budapest Castle, and then relaxing in a natural hot spring bath until I get all wrinkly.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

I really really really want to go to Slovenia. I can’t wait to explore Ljubljana, and I’m beside myself with excitement at the though of visiting Lake Bled, and possibly Postojna Caves.

Zagreb, Croatia

I visited the Dalmatian Coast in June last year and discovered just how beautiful Croatia is, in every way. That’s why I’m so excited about returning. But this time I’m going a bit further north to see what inland Croatia has to offer.

Do you have any tips for me before I set off? Or are there any other interrailing related questions you’d like me to try and answer?
